Ruellia brittoniana ‘Purple Shower’

If there is one landscape plant that is known for its regal beauty despite of being virtually trouble-free, then that must be Ruellia brittoniana ‘Purple Shower’ which is also known as Mexican petunia, Common ruellia, Wild petunia. Ruellia brittoniana ‘Purple Shower’ is a tender evergreen shrub that is about 3’ tall or so in height. It has colonies of semi-woody stalks that bear dark green lance-shaped leaves. These leaves cast a metallic blue color under direct sunlight. This plant bears the name ‘Purple Shower’ because it bears many purple flowers daily. Each tubular or trumpet-shaped flower can be seen at the tip of the stem and usually lasts for just one day.
Ruellia brittoniana ‘Purple Shower’ is a fast-growing plant and can even undergo self-seeding. This growth habit makes it one of the popular shrubs for landscaping. It is an ideal plant for use in a border or in hedges or at waterside. It can also grow in pots or in containers. In full bloom, the plant attracts many butterflies.
