Areca Palm (Scientific Name: Chrysalidocarpus lutescens or Dypsis lutescens) also known as Butterfly Palm, Yellow Palm, Golden Cane Palm, Madagascar palm and Areca Lutescens, is a common ornamental plant. It is usually grown in subtropical and tropical regions and is mostly cultivated in nurseries with palm trees. Areca Palm has smooth, bamboo-like trunks that appear like gently leaning away from each other.
Overall, Areca Palm is a large and bushy palm plant. At a younger stage, Areca Palm plants have reedy stems. Interestingly, those which are multi-trunked have attractive feather-shaped fronds. These long and gracefully arching fronds radiate from the trunks of the plants; a unique characteristic of Areca Palms. Small yellowish white flowers and small orange-yellow fruits are produced by shrub-like Areca Palm plants.
As a house plant, Areca Palm is beautiful when new but loses its lovely appearance overtime as fronds begin to grow bigger and bend over. Despite of this, Areca Palm plants are rated as the best houseplants that are capable of removing indoor air toxins. The fact that Areca Palms release some amounts of water in the air, they are important in keeping indoor humidity at an optimum level. It makes a great choice when you need a dense and tall plant to accentuate an empty space or room. In addition to being a great houseplant, Areca Palms are wonderful addition to any landscape.
