It is native to Central and South America and is also popular in Cuba and in Puerto Rico. The yam-like roots and the underground stem of the plant are known to be edible. In fact, it is a staple food in Africa since mid-1800s until today. The leaves of Xanthosoma lindenii form a dense clump making it one of the popular foliage plants.
