Tillandsias – The World’s Most Unusual Airplants
If you are someone who loves Bromeliads, we highly recommend that you go for Tillandsias. Remember that a Tillandsia is a Bromeliad plant but not all Bromeliads are Tillandsias. Tillandsias are commonly known as Airplants, but not all Bromeliads are Airplants. That may sound confusing but here are some information that will make you love the world’s most unusual living airplants.
Tillandsias are typically gray-leafed plants with various species, each species showing unique sets of leaves, growth habit, and flowers. There are species that show symmetrical rosettes of leaves while others have twisted, undulating, or curled leaves. There are also Tillandsias with succulent leaves. These species form interesting hollow bulbous structures at the bases of the plants. If are a lover of vine-like plants or climbers, then go for Tillandsias that develop long, vine-like stems. The Tillandsias that you can see at the left were grown under controlled conditions. This is one unique characteristic common to many Tillandsias – their strange growth habit.
As a member of the Bromeliad family, family of plants known for their lasting flowers, Tillandsias plants boast various form of truly captivating flowers. Some plants have barely visible flowers that rest among the leaves. Since the flowers are often considered insignificant, these kinds of Tillandsias are known for their red foliage that usually appears at flowering time. Other Tillandsias have long and multi-branched spikes. These spikes are very colorful and carries different shapes as well as scent.
