The Fuss-free Beauty of Sansevieria Twist
Sansevieria plants are popular foliage plants. In addition to the usual upright growth of the nesting leaves of common Sansevieria varieties, there are several species with leaves that are compact and with twisted or searching fronds. Shown at the left is Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’ called ‘Twist’. Also known as the Goldband Sansevieria, the plant shows a rosette of mostly folded or swirled or twisted leaves.
Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii is also known as ‘Mother-in-law’s tongue because of its stiff, swordlike, and spine-tipped leaves. Unique to this Sansevieria species are the attractive golden yellow margins seen on the leaves. At the center of each leaf is a deep green and light-green cross-band which makes this plant also known as one of the snake plants. Unknown to many are the fragrant greenish-white flowers produced by the plant.
The mottled or striped or cross-banded leaves of Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii makes it a welcoming accent to any interior. Its strap-like twisted leaves nesting beautifully on a pot or container provides a sculptural quality that is perfect for a stunning indoor accent. As one of the toughest plants known to man, Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii is ideal for use in an apartment of in the office as a container plant. The durability and the natural architectural beauty of this “Twist” make it an excellent container plant for patios or with other plants for borders. In addition, this plant is a famous source of bowstring hemp that is taken from the leaves, thus making it known in another trivial name – the Viper’s Bowstring Hemp.
