Fall In Love with Philodendron ‘Red Emerald’ - The Sweetheart Plant

Philodendron erubescens ‘Red Emerald’, is another man-made philodendron hybrid. This cultivar has a unique and catchy red petioles at the bottom of the the glossy, heart shaped leaves.  These attractive deep red underside veins that appears like red highlights or shadings at the bottom of the leaves makes this cultivar a cut above the rest of the philodendrons. In addition, this particular hybrid is known for its climbing growth characteristic.  Not all philodendrons are climbers but Red Emerald is a one-of-a-kind vining climber philodendron that can climb up to 60 feet either in its rainforest habitat or even for a shady pot.  Each long and narrow glossy leaf is heart-shaped thus this plant is commonly known as Sweetheart Plant.

Red Emerald plants are easy to maintain climbing plants thus most of them are grown on totem poles or moss poles where their red to burgundy stems that perfectly matches the red underside veins of the shiny green leaves can be clearly seen.  The contrast between red and green coloration of this plant is so amazing. The narrow heart-shaped leaves and the burgundy stems are breathtaking when seen on plants grown as hanging baskets.  This plant can even maintain its unique beauty even if put in narrow places.
