Vanda coerulea – The Blue Orchid

VANDA (van’-dah). A genus of handsome tropical epiphytic orchids with racemes of fragrant white, lilac, blue, or greenish flowers, sometimes with sacs or spurs, growing from the axils of the leaves, which are arranged on the stems and branches in 2 opposite rows. Natives of the tropics of the E. hemisphere, they require a high temperature and a humid atmosphere during the growing season, but in the winter months should be exposed to the sun in a drier, cooler place. For further cultural details see Orchids.
Among the outstandingly beautiful species are: Vanda tricolor from Java, with 11-in. racemes of yellow, brown-spotted flowers, with violet lips, streaked with purple; and Vanda caerulea (the Blue Orchid) from the Himalayas, with light blue blossoms 4 in. across in erect racemes 18 in. high. Some of the hybrids of Vanda caerulea are remarkable for their decided dark blue color.
Vanda is considered to be one of the most beautiful orchids around the world. It is grown for its wonderful foliage and beautiful flowers that are rich in color.
If you are a keen observer, you will notice that its stem interestingly strives toward sunlight. The stems can tackle the heat of the sun but the beautiful green foliage usually gets burned without utmost care and attention. Vanda flowers show in various colors. The one shown here is the Vanda coerule or the Blue Orchid. This species has large bluish-lavender flowers that appear very blue when observed under direct sunlight. Nowadays, the Blue Orchid is considered to be an endangered species due to over-collecting.
Vandas can grow to about 4 feet tall, just in case you intend to have a tall plant. They can also grow as a hanging plant with their roots dangling down elegantly giving a stunning effect to your garden. The keys to having beautiful orchid Vanda are proper care and attention as well as sufficient humidity and light.
