Lilies And Your Wedding
It’s no accident that lilies are such a prominent part of so many weddings. They’re simply perfect for the occasion. A wedding lily can be any of a dozen different species, but whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong. They’re beautiful, hardy, and they last well even under hot lights.
The Calla lily is one of the most popular, of course. That’s not just an accident of tradition. This species makes for a perfect bouquet. Imagine an orange petal, surrounded by cream-colored roses. Delightful, no? Or, you can go with a delicate lavender that is accented by hydrangea of similar color. Even the artificial silk variety looks spectacular.
Calla lilies are also flexible. Doing duty far beyond the bridal bouquet, they can be used for the wedding reception tables, the entrance to the wedding hall, or many other locations that are always part of that special day. Their large, central, white stamen adds a lovely contrast to the colorful petals. Or, you can order white calla lilies with golden stamen and mix and match in a floral display of unsurpassed beauty.

Still, while it might be the most common species selected, the calla lily is far from the only option. A Victorian-themed wedding might want to stick to tradition, but a contemporary theme opens up all sorts of possibilities.
There are several species of Asiatic lilies that are just perfect for a Hawaiian-themed wedding. With their bright red petals, curled back like a Turk’s Cap, they offer both color and style. Tigrinum, Davidii, Amabile, and many more offer a stunning variety to choose from.
For something delightfully different that will suit a wide range of themes, Martagons should be on your list to consider. Their petals tend to be much smaller, and therefore offer a design difference that can be put to good use in many places, like small vases on the reception tables.
There’s no end of color choices with Martagon lilies, either. Delicate yellow, vivid purple, and many more are available. Most have lovely spots, streaks, and other color varieties that will liven up a floral display. The Dalhansonii is particularly striking with its bright red petals dotted with yellow circles. Beyond the color and species, lilies offer several advantages for your wedding flower needs.
As cut flowers, they can easily outlast many other species. They do well in a vase with only a bit of water to keep them fresh. There are also several species in the Oriental and Trumpet divisions that provide lovely fragrances. That’s a nice alternative to roses or lavender. They also grow on stalks that range anywhere from 2-8 feet, so you can place some in a smaller vase and use others in that tall container near the reception line entrance.
