Galtonia
GALTONIA (gaul-toh’-ni-ah) - Giant Summer-hyacinth. A small genus of South African bulbs of the Lily Family which produce, in midsummer, tall spikes bearing fragrant, white or greenish drooping bell-shaped flowers. The basal leaves are stout and strap-shaped. The bulbs are tender in the temperate zone and must either be heavily mulched (after being planted in a protected location) or dug up in early fall, stored in a frost-free place over winter and planted out when the soil warms in the spring. They increase naturally by offsets, but can also be raised freely from seed. The principal species is Galtonia candicans (formerly Hyacinthus candicans), whose white flowers are borne on stems 3 ft. high.
