Galax

GALAX (gay’-laks) apliylla. A stemless perennial herb, with stiff shining heart-shaped or rounded leaves up to 5 in. across, and small white flowers in a spike from 9 to 15 in. high. Native from Virginia. to Georgia. and belonging to the Diapensia Family, it is fairly hardy North., thriving in sandy loam with peat or leafmold and suitable for a ground cover in a partly shaded place. Propagated by division.

Galax leaves gathered in large quantities from wild plants in the mountains of Virginia. and North Carolina, are much used by florists for wreath making and other decorative work. They keep well in cool storage and take on a bronzy tint in fall that makes them additionally attractive.
