Furcraea foetida – The Stunning Structural Succulent

Furcraea foetida (Giant Cabuya, Green-aloe female karata, maguey, mayuey criollo, cocuisa, giant cabuya, and aloes vert) is widely grown for its large striped linear leaves with slight wavy margins. These fleshy leaves, in addition to their attractive bright green to yellow-green coloration, have thread-like parallel fibers thus it is more commonly known as Mauritius hemp. Leaves of Furcraea foetida may be rigid, straight or curved with a short blunt spine. A closer look at each leaf will let you see a few widely spaced marginal prickles, especially toward base. The leaves grow or form into a basal rosette starting from the center of this stemless or short-stemmed perennial shrub. In addition to the leaves, Furcraea foetida produces strongly fragrant flowers. These flowers are greenish to creamy-white in color and open a few at a time for several weeks.
From the leaves to the roots, Furcraea foetida, proves to be a very useful plant. Other than being a source of fiber, the leaves of Furcraea foetida has medicinal uses such as anti-inflammatory effects to aid in wound healing.
