Summary: With plans ready the work of transferring lifeless curves, lines and figures into living, growing plants, with light, shade, color and fragrance begins.
With the plans prepared, the remaining – and most exciting – part of the work remains to be done: that of transferring the lifeless lines and curves and figures on the plan into living, growing plants, with light and shade, color and fragrance in the garden itself.
The first step in accomplishing this will be to “lay out” the plan on the grounds. To do this a generous number of stout pointed stakes will be required. Drive these firmly into the ground at points which will mark off plainly:

- The 5 Basic Areas
- Ends and General Location of Walks and Paths
- Position of Gates or Arbors
- Position of any Large Specimen Trees to be planted
- Corners – and Intermediate Points of Shrubbery Borders, Flower borders, etc
It is best to put these stakes in only lightly at first, and then carefully check all measurements according to the plan before they are driven firmly into the ground.
