Fall Tips of Gardens and Growers

A great deal of thought will be given to house plants during the next few months. The object will be to keep them growing and blooming through the dull days of winter.

Feeding is part of this. Many indoor-gardening enthusiasts recommend a constant feeding program throughout the year for best results. One of the easiest ways to feed house plants is with a soluble plant food. These are the kinds which are dissolved in water and applied just as if you were watering. In fact, one feeding with soluble plant food takes the place of one regular watering, so you are actually doing two jobs in one.

Some people are always trying a different plant food; others like to stick by the time proven ones. If you are one of the latter gardeners, then you probably have used Peter’s 20-20-20. Many soluble plant foods have come and gone, but Peter’s has been on the market for decades. Of course, improvements have been made in the formula from time to time, but since its inception it has given results - and still does. Peter’s was also one of the first materials advocated for foliar feeding. This is possible on many of your house plants, but on those which demand that their leaves be kept dry, it still can be applied to the soil.

Some years insect and disease pests seem to be worse than others. Scientists say this is reflected by the severity of the preceding winter and the temperature and humidity during the summer months. Regardless, we all know that insects and diseases are around every year-even in the winter. So the spray program shouldn’t stop when the days begin to get a little cooler. A few sprayings in the fall may even eliminate some insects which would normally winter over and prey on your plants next spring and summer.
