Fagaceae

FAGACEAE (fa-gay’-see-ee). Botanical name of the Beech Family, which includes Fagus (beech), Quercus (oak), and Castanea (chestnut), all woody trees or shrubs distributed for the most part in the temperate and subtropical regions of the northern hemisphere. Male flowers are borne in catkins; female flowers are clustered or solitary ; the fruit is a nut enclosed in a cub or bur. The family furnishes many desirable species for ornament and shade; some yield valuable timber, edible nuts, and medicinal and dye products.
