Edelweiss
EDELWEISS (ay’-del-vys). Common name for Leontopodium alpinum, a perennial, tufted herb of the Composite Family, with white-woolly foliage and inconspicuous flowers in heads surrounded by floral leaves in star-like clusters resembling “pearly everlastings.” Native to high mountains of Central Asia and Europe and especially associated with the Swiss Alps, it is a favorite truly alpine subject for rock gardens though sometimes grown in pots. It requires a rough, sandy loam, plenty of room in the rock pockets for its widespreading roots, and full sunlight. It will also grow in the border. Division of the roots is not often successful, so it is better to grow the plants from seed.
