Echinocystis

ECHINOCYSTIS (ee-ky-noh-sis’-tis). Wild-cucumber, Wild Balsam-apple. Annual and perennial vines, native to both North and South America. Echinocystis lobata, a fast-growing annual species, is widely distributed in eastern North America and is useful as a temporary screen for unsightly objects, or to drape fences and arbors. It has deeply lobed leaves, clusters of small white or greenish flowers, and egg-shaped prickly fruit. Plants are easily grown from seed.
