Echinocereus

ECHINOCEREUS (ee-ky-noh-see’-reeus). Confined to Western U. S. and Mexico, this genus of cacti contains some of the most desirable forms for cultivation. They are fairly hardy, desert species which need little care and reward the grower with most beautiful flowers. The blossoms are for the most part large and brilliant - rose, magenta, carmine, red-violet, a few yellow and, in two cases, smaller and green.

One of the distinguishing characters of the genus is the feathery green stigma lobes, which set off the coloring and add just the finishing touch to what already approaches perfection. Many of the species are small enough to be effectively used as dish plants ; other larger ones make excellent pot plants. Most species of this genus bear edible fruits which earn for them the name of Strawberry Cactus.
