Air Layering of Dracaena Song of India

Dracaenas are easy to propagate by air layering.  Air layering or stem/cane cuttings for propagating large specimens of dracaenas are highly usually done in spring or late summer.  Air layering is, basically, a method of producing roots on the foliage-less leggy stem of the plant.

D. reflexa ‘Song of India’ is one dracaena plant cultivar that can be propagated using the air layering method.  A healthy ‘Song of India’ has short green leaves with lime yellow margins on single stems when young.  Although this plant is weak-stemmed and difficult to grow, its stems are pliant enough to allow braiding and twisting and most especially wounding for the air layering procedure. The wounded stem is then enclosed with moist and sterilized rooting medium until roots develop in this wounded area.  After some time, these new roots become large enough to support a new plant.
