Cryptanthus bivittatus – the Earth’s Star

Christmas is just around the corner. And what can best symbolize Christmas in addition to the famous Christmas tree but the STAR of Bethlehem. Instead of the usual star-shaped lanterns, why not bring Christmas back to nature? Now is the perfect time to add the star-shaped Bromeliad to your garden or landscape – C. bivittatus Pink Starlite.

The leaves of Cryptanthus bivittatus bend or arch backward forming a flat rosette taking the shape of a star which resembles that of a falling star or a starfish thus this plant is also known as the Earth Star and Starfish Plant. Each strap-like leaf has toothed wavy edges with striking colors – prominently green with yellow stripes and heavily stained with bright pink. The undersides of each leaf are in light ash grey. Mature C. bivittatus Pink Starlite produces clusters of tiny-petaled white flowers. These flowers may be seen in the center of the rosette of leaves making the flowers a bit hidden. This is where the name Cryptanthus came from – ‘krypte’ (hidden) and ‘anthos’ (flower).
Pink Starlite is suitable for growing indoors. Use it as a small plant for table tops or for your dish gardens. It can brighten landscapes, as well.
