ZZ Plant Popular Around the World

The ZZ Plant or Zamioculcas Zamiifolia is one of the toughest most durable house plants I’ve found. They can handle conditions most indoor tropical plants would never consider “liveable.” It is on the same level as Aspidistra - Cast Iron Plant and Sanseviera.

The popularity of the ZZ plant has grown across the United States and Canada. It is also popular in Europe.

I’m always interested in how people grow, what plants they grow in other parts of the globe. The ZZ plant is no different.

Here are a couple of pictures I received from a nursery growing the ZZ in Vietnam. The plants look healthy and growing in plastic bags.

If you have trouble with houseplants give the Zamioculcas (ZZ) a try.

Phalaenopsis Find the Right light for your Moth Orchid

Soon the beautiful and usually long lasting Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) will be more available in the stores. Finding the right light can help make this unsuspecting indoor house plant last much longer in bloom.

Generally most orchids require plenty of light, preferably 6 hours per day. Orchids are tough and can handle more or less of their recommended light. Providing more light will enhance the flowering potential. Less light will prevent the plants from flowering but they still grow.

At the holidays lots of people go to parties and give gifts. Maybe you’ve thought of giving a house plant as a gift to someone special. Well… if that’s your plan stop and think a little about the person and the plant.

Does the person use plants of flowers regularly?
Do they currently have house plants?
… and a few more questions to ask.

Also while you’re at the party or throwing a party. Watch out for any house plants being a “collection container” for drinks. Indoor plants don’t do well with alcohol!

Cleaning House Plants Make Them Happy & Work Better

clean indoor house plants regularly for a healthier plant
After a period of time your indoor house plants (live ones and even silk houseplants) will accumulate dust and dirt. The leaf pores are like our skin. These pores can become clogged and make it difficult for the plant to breathe, make food and function.

This also makes it harder for the plant to move nutrients and allow the plant to get the most benefit of the available light. Think of your houseplant living it’s life with dirty sunglasses on!

Besides dust and dirt - insects, mites, scale and other pest can be monitored with cleaning.

Remember indoor plants already must go through an acclimating process when moving inside. Cleaning your leaves on a regular basis will not only help the plant look better, but also help remove pest.

Don’t wait for winter for cleaning your indoor plants start cleaning them on a regular basis.
