Poinsettia Time of The Year

Since we’re in the holiday season we need to add another day to celebrate. I know you’ll want to mark your calendar.

The Day is December 12th – National Poinsettia Day! This day marks the death of Joel Robert Poinsett.

In 1825, he introduced the Poinsettia to the United States. One of the best ways to celebrate this day is to take a moment and learn a little more about the care of this holiday favorite.

Temperature – If you are comfortable your poinsettia should be comfortable. Try to keep the temperatures in the 60-70 degree range. Stay away from drafts, dry air from heat ducts and cold spots.

Light – A west facing window is good but keep the plant out of direct light. Try to provide 6 hours of bright indirect light.

Watering - Do not keep the soil wet! Moist soil is what the poinsettia wants. When watering take the plant out of the decorative container, water the plant thoroughly, allow the water to drain completely before placing back into the decorative pot.

Fertilizer – Do Not Fertilize! Wait until after the holiday season to fertilize. Enjoy the Holiday season and your poinsettias!
