The Tough Aspidistra elatior Plant
The humble Aspidistra elatior is a tough evergreen, perennial plant that spread in clumps. Appropriately known as the Cast-iron plant and sometimes barroom plant, it is noted for its ability to withstand abuse, neglect, and the unlikeliest of places; even survive near-freezing temperatures.
Its tough reputation is linked not only to its unique ability to withstand adverse conditions but also to its foliage-like appearance. This resemblance to tropical foliage plants makes it a perfect plant for interiorscaping and for use as a border. When potted or grown in a container it becomes an amazing porch or patio plant.
Aspidistra elatior has straplike, glossy, deep green leaves that grow up to to 24 inches long and rising to form upright clumps of evergreen foliage, with each leaf supported by a grooved leaf stalk. Purple-brown small flowers are occasionally produced near the base of the plant. Unlike other plants where the flowers are used by most florists, the leaves are the favorites in most floral arrangements because of its long lasting and dramatic effect.
