Achimenes The African Violet Relative
ACHIMENES (ah-kim’-e-neez). A genus of tropical American plants of the Gesneria Family grown in greenhouses for their showy flowers and occasionally planted out in the garden in the summer. They have thick tuberous roots and gloxinia-like flowers in red, white and violet. Propagated by division, or by cuttings.

Achimenes longiflora (Trumpet Achimenes) has attractive, long-tubed violet flowers, each one growing from the axil of a leaf.
Achimenes swainsoni is a horticultural (developed) form with pale-lavender spotted flowers.
