Prunus x yedoensis Yoshino Cherry Spring Blossoms

When you go to parks, winter-inspired landscapes, and the likes especially in Japan you will notice one particular tree that produces lovely flowers – the Cherry Blossom. From leaves to flowers, the Cherry blossom proves to be a very interesting plant. Its leaves for instance do not appear until after full bloom. So when you look at blooming cherry blossoms, all you can see are its flowers and the branches of the deciduous Cherry Blossom tree.

Cherry blossoms leaves are bronze-toned or coppery brown once they start to appear. But during summer, they become dark green. Some varieties produce pure white blossoms; whereas others produce link pink ones. Still, others produce dark pink or slightly yellowish blossoms. In addition, there are varieties that produce flowers which change their color as they bloom, say, from white to pink only during a few days.

At the left is a photo of one Cherry blossom variety that produces white blossoms – the Prunus x yedoensis Yoshino. This is one example of a hybrid cherry known as a product from the cross between Prunus speciosa and Prunus subhirtella. The flowers were observed to be scented and emerged firstly in pale pink color eventually fading to white. Although the flowers last only for a few days, the elegant shape and size of Yoshino make it ideal for ornamental purposes.
