The Magnificent Gloriosa Rothschildiana

Gloriosa RothschildianaGloriosa rothschildiana plants or Gloriosa lilies are climbing lilies which are also known as glory lily or flame lily. This plant really looks spectacular – from its exotic flowers, amazing trailing stems, to its lush green leaves. Overall, the plant is an easy-to-grow climbing lily. It has trailing stems clothed with shiny and whorled leaves. Each leaf has tipped end which is used to aid the plant in climbing.

The flowers of Gloriosa rothschildiana are its main attractions. Featured in some US postage stamps, the flowers of Gloriosa rothschildiana have wavy-edged petals in vibrant rent or crimson color with vivid yellow base and edges. The combination of cimson and yellow makes the flowers appear as if the whole Gloriosa rothschildiana plant is on fire. Interestingly, the petals face downward at bud stage then they open up to a backward arch as if they are blown backwards by a strong wind.

Gloriosa rothschildiana is not just beautiful but also multi-purpose. Its flowers and stems make excellent additions to cut flower arrangements. As a climbing lily, the plant are suitable for growing on fences and trellises. They also look magnificent on pots and containers even in a sheltered garden or a conservatory.
