Petunia Plants – Fully Loaded with Color and Beauty

Petunia Plants

The photo at the left shows one of the many varieties of Petunia. Petunia plants are popular for their brilliantly-colored flowers and attractive green foliage. They have small ovate leaves that are covered with sticky hairs. A look at the plant will let you see that it is loaded with bell-shaped flowers. The name Petunia came from the word petun ‘tobacco’ from a Tupi-Guarani language.

The trumpet-shaped Petunia varieties that we see in many gardens nowadays are mostly hybrids. Grandifloras are petunia plants with the largest flowers. We also have the spreading petunias which are sometimes called groundcover petunias. The Milliflora varities are the smallest petunias.

Petunia plants are loved by many landscapers because they make colorful low borders to many gardens. Indoors, they can make perfect centerpieces, hanging baskets, and window boxes. The milliflora petunias are great attractions along garden beds and edges especially when mixed with other plants.
